I think there’s probably always been a melody in my heart. One of my first acts of mischief as a young child – at least that I remember – was sneaking my parent’s radio into my bedroom where I’d hide it under my pillow and fall asleep listening to the classic country station. Think Anne Murray and Kenny Rogers. (I’m getting old; I know!) Over the years, my interests have ranged from country to Broadway, from sacred to jazz, and from classical to contemporary hymns.
Here’s a blast from the past! Can you find me in all of my high school Show Choir glory? (wink)
But seriously, there’s just something about music that bypasses the brain and touches places deep in the heart. So, when I was going through a particularly rough season in 2008, it’s no surprise to me that one way I survived was to go into my office, close the door, then pull up a friend’s playlist and put it on auto-repeat. She was walking through hard things too and the songs she chose reflected that. She unknowingly introduced me to “You’re Not Alone” by Meredith Andrews, and I clung to those lyrics like my life depended on it. As low as I felt during that season, it probably did.
This week I’ve gone back and created my own playlist, and I offer it here as means for beginning to tap into emotions you need to release. Some you may be aware of and some you may not even realize you’re hoarding. A huge part of a heart’s healing can’t happen until we’re willing to bravely face what’s really there, in all its intensity. God has used these songs with the precision of surgical steel to lance emotional boils festering in places too deep for spoken (or written) words to reach by themselves. He’s also used them like the richest of balms infused with frankincense, myrrh and lavender, the aroma of healing.
I know when I am at my lowest of low places, the mental energy to pick up a book often isn’t there. So, whether or not you found the book list of any help or encouragement, I hope this playlist at least gives you hope. All you have to do is turn it on; think of it as a soundtrack for healing if you like. Or, use it as an example to create your own. What most ministers to you may be a very different style than what soothes my soul! (Note: Even though the first video is embedded, it’ll be best to watch and listen on YouTube, so please click through when you’re ready.)
As you listen, know that you are never alone. You are held by the One who keeps the universe spinning. Nothing in your life will ultimately go unredeemed. He is answering your prayers even though sometimes the blessings you seek come cloaked in trials. He promises to carry you and heal every wound. You are not abandoned on a wrong road, regardless of what anyone tells you. And, at the end of the day, He is still holy, still worthy, still clothing you with grace upon grace. Amazing! May we lift our sorrows to Him, proclaim “It Is Well,” and never lose our sense of wonder at belonging to Him.
What do you listen to to support your soul?
