Welcome to the Decompression Zone!

If you’ve been following along, you know we’ve already talked about some basic ways to support yourself when you’re going through or recovering from a hard time emotionally. In the first few posts, we’ve talked about the importance of getting good sleep, gentle exercise, and sunshine to support your healthy lifestyle.

Pretty simple stuff, right? It’s easy to talk about, but maybe a little bit harder to make it happen in the schedule. In this post, we’re talking about the importance of hydration.

Water is one of those other resources that we know we need but maybe don’t always get enough of. Hydration is important for every cell in the body. Without enough water, we just don’t function the way we should. I think the general consensus is that you should drink about 8 8-oz. glasses a day give or take a little based on your size. So, how do you make that happen? Here are a couple tips that work for me.

First, get a quart-sized glass jar and use that for measuring your water. If you do that, you only have to count up to 2 or 3 in order to know you’ve drunk enough water for the day! The other strategy I use is adding a drop or two of a pure essential oil to each jar of water I drink. Citrus oils like Orange, Lemon, Lime and Grapefruit Vitality from Young Living are my favorites. They freshen the taste and make me want to drink more water. And anything that helps me stay hydrated is worth it! (Please note: Not all essential oils are created equal and Young Living is the *only* brand I can recommend for ingesting like this!)

The other way I like to stay hydrated and support but my overall health is by taking Epsom salt baths. I hope you enjoyed the video from my “Decompression Zone”! The salts have magnesium in them which is a mineral that is critical to the body and necessary for emotional support as well as good sleep. You can get it in a variety of foods and supplements, but I really like the soaking method because it combines nutrition, detoxing, and relaxation. I’m definitely a fan of multi-tasking!

bath salts and oils

I was a fan of baths already, but in the last couple years I’ve made them a more regular priority. Along with the Epson salts, I like to add a cup of baking soda and 8-10 drops of Young Living essential oils to complement the health benefits of the salts. Blends like Joy, Valor, and Stress Away are some of my favorites for soothing every day cares and promoting a sense of calm and relaxation!

To get the optimal benefits from the salts and whatever else you choose to put in your bath, you need to soak for 20-30 minutes. So, grab a book or your iPod and slip away for a little “me” time. Baths are easy and inexpensive, but you do have to plan them into your schedule or they aren’t as likely to happen. It may feel like a luxury, but go ahead! Because … your wellness is worth it!

Who’s up for a little “soak your stress away” challenge?! If you’re committing to making this happen for yourself sometime in the next few days share something like this in the thread below: “Me! It’s on my calendar for tomorrow night.”
